If you’re looking for the perfect gift for that hard-to-buy-for canine friend, a new shop opening in Astoria looks to be a real treat.

La De Dog is the name of the new upscale pet boutique on 10th St.

Owners Tony and Renee Weatherford are outfitting the unique store, whose "prefurred" clientele will be four-legged citizens and their human companions.

"We’re looking to create an interesting place where you can take your dog," Tony said.

The two brainstormed the name after deciding they wanted it to reflect an upmarket approach.

In terms of edibles, the store will focus on high-end organic pet foods and cookies.

"With all the recent problems with pet foods, we’re going to carry organic foods," he said.

They’ll also feature pet carriers and dog clothes, leashes and unique pet toys.

"It’s fun to find things for smaller dogs," Tony said. "But we’re also in pursuit of stuff for bigger dogs."

Renee pointed to a counter in back, where a row of big, clear glass apothecary jars will soon be filled with homemade treats.

"We’re going to call that area the "Barkery" she said, smiling, in honor of its focus on cookies.

They’ll be using local vendors whenever possible for their inventory.

Renee said they’ll also be planning lots of pet - related events to involve patrons and their people.

Another aspect of the business will be pet photography – Renee’s specialty. Customers will be able to get custom portraits of their furry family members. Photo contests are also in the works.

The Weatherfords moved to Astoria about a year ago. They relocated from northern California.

Renee said she and Tony love Astoria, and she has close ties to the area.

"I have a lot of family in Oregon," she said. "We vacationed in this area when I was a child."

La De Dog is slated to open at the end of August. The store will have a grand opening event on Labor Day.

You’ll find La De Dog at 120 10th St., a few doors up from the Riverwalk. Tentative store hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. La De Dog will be closed Wednesdays.
